At Kesser Yosef, we believe in the importance of Extracurricular Activities as an important tool in the development of our students.
Fundamentally, extracurricular activities allow students to learn something that could stay with them for a lifetime.
Directly, that skill could be the basis of a hobby or passion that enriches their life for many years. Everything from playing sports to learning an instrument could lead to hours spent doing something they enjoy.
Beyond that, extracurricular activities instill key skills and personality traits that can be helpful in other walks of life. Using the same examples, sports are key to developing teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. A musical instrument requires perseverance, hand-eye coordination and, above all, creativity. These are skills that provide continued benefits long after they leave the yeshiva.
Extracurricular activities can also aid in the development of self-esteem and confidence. It is gratifying when we succeed in something we enjoy, especially after working hard to achieve it. Good self-esteem is an essential tool for positive mental health and wellbeing.
We dedicate an hour each day (Monday-Thursday) towards Extracurricular Activities. Twice a week, we rent out a gym for the students to play basketball, while the other two days, the students get to choose to learn Martial Arts, Music or Art. We strategically place these activities in the middle of the day so that we can break up the long hours of learning with some fun.

Martial Arts
Martial arts provides a number of excellent health benefits, in addition to instilling discipline and confidence within students. Through improving one’s skills during practice, a student of martial arts will also be able to build a healthier body and, by extension, lifestyle.
Martial arts can be a fantastic way to increase the ability to focus. You learn how to keep your head in the game without drifting away and how to perform with focus even in the most stressful situations. |
Gym
For a long time, sports have been viewed as a way to stay healthy and in shape, but their importance goes much further. As a matter of fact, playing sports teaches life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability, and teamwork.
Studies have shown that exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps the body build more connections between nerves, leading to increased concentration, enhanced memory, stimulated creativity, and better-developed problem solving skills. In short, playing sports helps your brain grow and makes it work better. |
